Tintin Audiobooks

My son, who loves Tintin stories but is not yet able to read them on his own – that font is a tad small, no? – was beside himself when we found a series of SIX Tintin books on cassette tape. Originally produced by the BBC in 1999, these unabridged full radio plays include all the dialogue, sound effects, and music to make the books come alive. My son flips through his copies as he listens, and laughs out loud at the Captain’s profanities (if only all profanities sounded as good). Here is a list of the books on the cassette series:

  • The Black Island
  • The Secret of the Unicorn
  • Red Rackham’s Treasure
  • Destination Moon
  • Explorers on the Moon

We don’t carry these audiobooks at ShopTintin - we are waiting for them to come out on CD or as a download. In the meantime, we recommend doing what we do when we want to listen to Tintin and the Captain: we go to our local library.

Tintin Festival Begins May 8, 2009!

The annual Tintin festival will kick-off Friday 8 May 2009 and end Sunday 10 May 2009. This year, the theme is Tintin’s 80th Birthday and the anniversary will be marked with the opening of the Hergé museum outside Brussels,  events in Lausane (one of my favorite cities – I just love that lake!) with the major festivities in Namur, southern Belgium.

In Namur, according to the website OPT,

numerous animations events will be organised for young and old: soapbox go-kart races, exhibitions, the Namur to Louvain-la-Neuve classic-car rally and many other activities on the theme of Tintin and his adventures.

If any TintinBlog readers go to the events, or know of anyone who is going, please send photos!

Tintin Movie Starts in Two Weeks!

Here is some exciting news about the upcoming Tintin movies from Andy Serkis, the actor who will play Captain Haddock. The movie FINALLY begins production.

“We are starting Tintin the week after next,” according to actor Andy Serkis ComingSoon.net at a recent press event. “Peter Jackson is producing and Steven Spielberg is directing. I remember reading them as a child. I wasn’t this massive fan. I loved the almost storyboard nature of the beautiful, beautiful drawings. And the way its going to be done… It’s obviously performance capture so it’s is going to be perfect. There isn’t a more perfect way of doing it.”

For those of you who don’t know too much about Serkis, I suggest you read one of my previous posts about the actor.

Tintin is Actually Danish?

For those of you who may not know who inspired Hergé to create the character of Tintin, I thought I would share this tidy summary from The Copenhagen Post:

Tintin displays his Danish roots
MONDAY, 12 JANUARY 2009 15:04 KR
Famed cartoon character Tintin was based on Danish teenager who traveled the world.

After decades of traveling the world in search of adventure with his faithful dog Snowy by his side, the Belgian cartoon character Tintin celebrated his 80th birthday on Saturday. Somewhere in a Copenhagen nursing home, the Danish inspiration for the character smiled with glee.

‘It sounds fun to be the cause of it, doesn’t it? It’s an enormous pleasure,’ Palle Huld told Ekstra Bladet newspaper. The 96-year-old former actor confirmed that Tintin’s creator, Georges Remi, better known by pen-name Hergé, was inspired by a trip undertaken by the Dane when he was just a teenager.

Hald was just 15 years old when he won a newspaper competition to take a trip around the world, marking the centenary of Jules Verne. The adventure, dubbed ‘Around the world in 44 days’, attracted much attention from international media and caught the eye of the Belgian cartoonist.

On Hald’s return, he was welcomed by a huge crowd at Copenhagen railway station, just like Tintin in his first adventure, but the Dane admits he has trouble remembering much of his earlier travels.

The first comic strip adventures of Tintin were published in Belgian newspaper Le Vingtieme Siecle in 1929 and went on to sell more than 200 million books featuring the mystery-solving teenager reporter .
